Characteristics of Zeeland
Zeeland is located at the south west of the country and consists of several larger and smaller islands. This is where in 1953 a disaster happened when the dikes broke during a terrible storm at night. The sea invaded this part of the country, leaving almost 2000 people dead. In later years the dikes were all made wider and higher and sea arms were closed in by new dikes. This achievement is known as the Deltaworks and took tens of years to be completed. You can learn about Zeeland's endless fight with the sea at the Delta Expo.
Zeeland is a quiet province with some nice cycling along the dikes. Inland you'll be surrounded by agricultural fields.
